VARIANTS OF THE LUNAR ECLIPSE 2007, MARCH 3-4

I. ANTICIPATED VARIANT

RED MOON RISING
-by Alin Tolea (U.S.A.)-

It's oddly dark and shadow
Has engulfed the skies
Too red Selena and too yellow hues
Are cast upon its lighted face

There's blood in heaven but alas
So beautiful and touched
By furtive sunlight sneaking though the cosmic darkness
La Luna is…

Too short, you gasp
Wide open eyes with thirst within
And starry heavens die
It's light again

II. INTERNET VARIANT

LUNAR ECLIPSE HAIKU
-by Andrei Dorian Gheorghe-

Earth's shadow on the Moon
lambada is envy
this is a slow dance

III. SOUTH VARIANT

ASTRAL COINCIDENCE
-by Danut Ionescu (New Zealand)-

Interesting!
When in the north
the lunar eclipse is during totality,
here in the south
the Sun is on the meridian
(almost!).

IV. CLOUDY VARIANT IN ROMANIA

A TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE DEFEATED BY CLOUDS
-by Andrei Dorian Gheorghe-

When a dragon gulps the moon
we can watch an interesting lunar eclipse.
But if the clouds
gulp the dragon
…then we can dream of a
perfect lunar eclipse.

a certain base

the nasty moon

a good farce

...

TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE 2007 IN CERNAVODA
-by Iulian Olaru-

The clouds are terribly saucy here.
Even if during a total lunar eclipse
the Moon remains visible,
this time it will be invisible.

youth without old age
will fill the copper craters

PERFORMANCE
-by Boris Marian-

I heard that somewhere
“the wise people” tried
to catch the Moon in a scoop,
but during the first eclipse
they felt themselves
like in a coop.

TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE 2007 IN TARGOVISTE
-by Valentin Grigore-

I could only guess the penumbra,
then the umbra…
I saw the Moon so diffuse
among the clouds
…and it was raining…

Beams become red

Moon’s meditation

Moon’s red veil

where is the night’s princess?

WISHING UPON THE MOON
-by Claudia Surtea-

You are the only toy I have received from life,
yet you won't shine upon me.
I shall throw you away
and I shall buy a star,
a sun, a planet, or even an eclipse.
Why?!
Because then I'll know it will be mine.

LUNAR ECLIPSE
-by Cristina Slovineanu-

Chromatic sensibility
of she who is found
in lunar magic -
a hidden bride

An euphoric idol
of the shadow
is running in the night -
a princess’ blink

...

FOUCAULT’S PENDULUM
-by Dimitrie Olenici-

Cloudy weather in Suceava,
but the lunar eclipse existed
through the gravitational perturbations
to Foucault’s Pendulum.
(You know I am a penduloman
launched into a permanent penduliada.)
The researches are continuing.

V. HAPPY VARIANT

LUNAR ECLIPSE 2007
-by Alastair McBeath (U.K.)-

The March 3-4 lunar eclipse happened
under virtually clear skies across most of Britain for once
and I managed to view almost the whole thing,
except for a couple of times when clouds blocked it out
for ten minutes or so.
The Moon was quite colourful
and not too dark even at mid-eclipse for me,
though I found the penumbral shadow
easier to see on the inward than the outward leg…

...

LUNAR ECLIPSE 2007
-by Steve Sneyd (U.K.)-

For once
a clear night for an astronomical phenomenon,
the total lunar eclipse -
a very long totality, about 1.5 hours,
and dramatic even with my bad eyes,
for 1st 20 minutes a curious patchy glitter,
like a city in the sky,
before went to an overall dull
colder like dried blood…

...

LUNAR ECLIPSE
-by John Francis Haines (U.K.)-

Right over the house,
Invisible, unless I
Bore holes in the roof…

...

THE BASHFUL LOVER
-by Arlene Carol Brill (Turkey)-

Well beyond midnight
The moon rises overhead
Brilliant and pure white.

All too soon it fades.
The Earth’s greedy shadow takes
A bite of moon pie!

An apparition
Of its former self - aglow
The moon is blushing.

How bashful you are
Do not be shy mister moon
Show your face again

Symbol for lovers everywhere
This spring’s full moon
Dissolves in an eerie red blush.

...

LUNAR ECLIPSE
-by David M. Turner (U.K.)-

Every star tonight is dimmed
By the sheer glory of a spring full moon.
March, in lamb mode, *
Unfolds a dark clear stage for her stately progress
Across the primal sky;
Even Venus and Saturn quietly demur
To the lunar splendour.

Yet, as the snowdrops and crocuses
Bow to the goddess
In the transcendental glow
Of her illumination,
Shadows of dragons stalk the air.
They are always there,
Probing the sky even when
Planets and goddesses
Pay them no heed.
Always lurking
Awaiting their day and their time.

Suddenly the moon is dimmed.
From east to west the dimness spreads,
The goddess, still fully visible,
Is clearly diminished;
A great arc of the dragon’s maw
Eats into her globe,
Devouring more and more -
Death seems inevitable, unavoidable;
Venus will be left in queenly
Isolation among the panoply of stars.

Just as the heavens begin a chorus of grief
A miracle occurs.
Where the once bright moon hung in the sky another appears,
No longer shining,
No longer glorious
No longer the white queen of the black sky;
But sadder, seemingly smaller,
A ball of bathos above the watching world
Blood red and dark;

Staring back at the Earth,
Reflecting misery back to its source
And frowning a grim warning
That, though even the patience of gods
Has a limit,
Their ire knows no bounds.

* From English traditional weather lore:
“March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb” -
often reversed in practice!
