In 1998, Vatican Observatory organized a meeting to celebrate their international astronomical summer schools for young professional astronomers. With this occasion, the Romanian representative Stefan Berinde exhibited (and offered to the participants) a SARM collection, Creator and Universe - Anthology of Romanian Christian Contemporary Astropoetry (edited and translated from the Romanian by Andrei Dorian Gheorghe), from which we present the selection below:

MOTTO
Heavenly bodies in the solar system,
heavenly bodies in the deep sky,
and the Creator's smile
on every clear night.

HOW MANY OF US
how many of us
protected by the divine gift
dare to disappear into those tournaments
burning the cosmic remoteness
how many of us would be happy
to lose their traces
in the boundless silence that keeps up
even the music of the spheres

GENESIS
At first there was the Word of God,
then the word of mine, the words of yours and of many others,
and the words of the accursed void
that was throwing stars towards us.
But mother, crying,
pulled the stars out of our heads
and, in a spherical murmur of violins,
strung them into the sky
as for a childish game:
Pegasus, Aquila, Orion...
so on!

THE MYSTERIOUS DARKNESS
I see my being littler, Thinner, my God, and sadder.
Oh, I know, the suns make light,
But the darkness still exists!
It is not created by someone special,
But it is insistently lasting Before the world's beginning And after the world's end.
Using the star pattern,
I can break the abyssal peace,
I can make a tiny sun too,
But never more darkness, my God!
I can make cold, and clothes against it,
I can go even to the moon, But I never found the darkness' secret,
And I never knew, my God, to produce it.
I feel it spherically surrounding me
And freezing me in infinity,
But only You, on the hard night,
Are Life... and Gift... and Light!

COSMIC FACE
Your Cosmic Face
without a beginning or an end
exists in the movement
of constellations and galaxies.
Matter of stars is Your Book,
and in antimatter there is Your Wish,
my God!
The eternal present is
Your Divine Existence,
Creator!
The worlds of the infinite
and the beings crucified
on the knowledge cross
receive the Eucharist of Your Spirit.
Because You say: "They who receive Me, are free of the sky mysteries."
And, looking for the great mystery,
we see eternal God's Face
in the starry dust.

COMET HALE-BOPP
If time would flow back
and the angel would carry out a wish,
beyond the Gate I would shout:
Comet,
repeat yourself
one more time!
